Known as the 'Great Border City', Carlisle in the modern day is the main cultural, commercial and industrial centre in the borderlands of England. It is the home to the main campuses of the University of Cumbria and houses many museums and heritage centres. Carlisle currently has a population of around 108,000, which is an increase of about 6.7% from the figures that were recorded in 2001. Non-white ethnicities within the Carlisle district account for about 5.6% of the population. This is more than double the recorded figures of 2011; being only 2.2%. From these statistics, we can infer that, most likely, Carlisle has grown to be a much more welcoming, friendly, and sustainable environment for non-white ethnicities in recent years as opposed to what it may have been like as little as 10 years ago. The reason for this change will be due to several factors, but potentially the largest contributing factor to this would be the community of Carlisle. As currently the cultures of people are tending to be looked at more as the people of Carlisle will see more of the other cultures on the internet and from the statistics the community of Carlisle it is showing that the community is slowly changing from what it used to be before the turn of the century and from what the statistics say its looks like there is small changes coming for the better and the community of Carlisle will become more welcoming in the future.
